A LARGER-than-life seaside statue of Fylde funnyman Les Dawson has been approved.
The £60,000 bronze monument, which will be erected on St Annes promenade, was passed by Fylde Council's planning committee this morning. The tribute was passed by seven votes to two.

Residents living across from the Sunken Gardens site, which will also house a Garden of Fame to celebrate other Fylde favourite celebrities, slammed the plans. They submitted a string of objections to the council - including fears the statue would "stare" into their homes.

The statue will now be unveiled on Friday, October 24. It will follow a star-studded charity gala dinner at Blackpool Football Club on Thursday October 23 to induct three chosen celebrities to the garden.

The monument, which will be more than 6ft tall is being sculpted by Barnsley sculptor Graham Ibbeson – the man behind Eric Morecambe's iconic seafront tribute in Morecambe.

Go on Councillors - make the right decision and put Les in the sunken garden. A view is not a right, and it would be stupid of the council to allow the views of some rather selfish residents to decide the fate of the statue. It is only 6ft tall, the height of a normal adult so how will that affect the people of the seafront flats? Or are they saying they dont want people in the the sunken garden in case they look towards the flats too?

So the objectors dont want Les looking in, so why cant he face the otherc way...seems simple enough. As for their other reasons its pretty obvious by all those that commented they were just pathetic. "the sunken gardens should be for quiet contemplation," and as a tourist draw it would create traffic congestion" just what planet are the objectors on. The statue is far better than the RUSTY MONSTROCITIES on blackpool prom.

"Don't want Les Statue staring into our homes" What a pathetic thing to say . Its a statue You Muppets it can't See anything it doesn't STARE at anything !!
The council should either totally ignore these idiots or charge them any cost involved in putting it somewhere else . I would be interested to know just how far from their homes this statue is going to be . I bet the public can walk by & actually look & stare a hell of a lot closer .

This is fantastic news, not just for the statue, but because the whole of the garden area will be transformed and upgraded. Well done Councillors...you got it right this time!

great news that it has been approved, Les was a nice guy I met him a few times, had a drink with him once and it is well deserved, he loved Lytham St.Annes

They now need to amend the design of the statue. Make it peer through some binoculars. That will really freak those residents out.

Les Dawson is a national treasure and his characters live on .He deserves due prominence on the Fylde Coast where he chose to live . The residents should be proud to be residing close to his statue which will attract many visitors and well wishers as does the statue of Eric Morecambe further north up the Coast . Les would be laughing at the controversy and come out with a quip
such as ''My presence still annoys the residents even though I gave them none when I was alive.''

So still two councillors couldn't see commonsense!

They should make his head ten times bigger so it really stares.

Miserable residents need to lighten up, or wait until it goes dark, put it in a trailer and take it to the scrappers to be weighed in - - or put it on a neighbours doorstep
